Egypt > Support for Women in Politics in Egypt

This report was completed following an analysis of data collected from the July - August 2011 pre-election survey. While not all data collected is presented in this report, the focus is on gender disaggregated data relavent to women's political participation and participant social attitudes and knowledge of gender issues. Women were an integral part in the protests that took place throughout 2011, working to secure a "spot at the table" for inclusion in discussion and policy making. Yet although large numbers of women continued to go to the polls to vote, it is still unclear whether or not they will be recognized during the formation of the new government. Recently, the Inter-Parliamentary Union reported that women's participation in parliament in Egypt declined from 12 percent in 2010 to 2 percent in 2011. Yet women continue to demand rights and recognition in the political process and are looking for greater representation in government.
